Best programs to convert AVCHD files for home dvd player use...

Just got the Canon HF200. Looking to convert the files to burn to DVD so we can watch them in a dvd player. What programs are there to accomplish this? Free would be good, but I'm not opposed to something that costs money if it's good and easy to use.

Looks like DVD Flick will do it (for free) and if it doesn't read your AVCHD files you should be able to use Handbrake to convert the file to a format that DVD Flick can use (for free).

As you've probably discovered, the software that comes with Canon's camcorders sucks at converting to MPEG-2.

It's not free, but I've had the best results with Nero Vision.

AVStoDVD is the best of the free tools.

This is a powerful true multi-pass encoder that will produce stellar results. This puts it miles ahead of single pass stuff like DVDFlick or even ConvertXtoDVD. Both of which I like and have used, but they can't run with AVStoDVD.

As with all encoding you 'get what you pay for' so you can expect lengthy encoding times of up to and over 10-12 hours on many systems for multi-pass quality.

I tried DVDFlick last night. Video was fine but no audio. I'll have to try some of these other ones. Thanks for the suggestions.

AVStoDVD looks good, but just so you know it needs Avisynth and ImgBurn installed.

EDIT: Looks like Avisynth is included with the installer, I tried the no-install package and it warned me that it was needed.

Re: Best programs to convert AVCHD files for home dvd player use...

Ok, so thanks for the AVStoDVD recommendation. Works awesome now that I figured it out with some trial an error.

My next question is this. I have a panasonic BD30k Blu-Ray player. It can read AVCHD files off the SDHC card by plugging it right into the machine. So, I tried just burning the.mts file to a DVD but the machine wouldn't play it. So would that seem to be a function of the player? I don't want to have to convert these files for my own use (all conversion is for grandparents on both sides w/ dvd players). I'd like to just run the files natively without any conversion. Is that possible?

Re: Best programs to convert AVCHD files for home dvd player use...

I have a similar question. I've had a Canon HD camcorder for about 6 months now and was finally able to successfully get the AVCHD files off with Windows 7.

I just bought a Blu-Ray burner for my computer and want to create a Blu-Ray disc from those AVCHD files with the original quality and sound, menus, etc.

Maybe it's the free software that comes with the burner, but it will only allow outputting to a DVD disc and not a Blu-Ray disc. It's that because it is not the full software?

Will Nero allow me to create a complete Blu-Ray disc from those AVCHD files?

Thanx Chris
