Hey all, I have tried loading programs on to my computer...and some seem to work as you expect, but some do not. When I run start or setup from the CD-ROM, there is some spinning, and then nothing. This is true now for at least 10 programs. In some cases, I wonder if the install or program is not compatible with W2K?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I would tend to think that is not the case. I'll bet the CD-ROM autorun is not set. Whenever you put a CD in it will spin up, even if it has no intention of running the program.

Take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q155/2/17.asp

No X, I can get it to Autorun..and even if it does not (some older discs), I can browse and run install or setup. It seems totally normal and then nothing. No message. Nothing.

ANy thoughts?

Oh, you actually start an autorun.exe or setup.exe and nothing happens?

Got an example I might have heard of? Not those teen porn viewers, but a real program?

Many. Tried to load Adobe Pagemill. Nothing. Tried to load Adobe Acrobat 3. Nothing.

One of my CAD programs for schematic capture. Nothing. And it starts the install program and then nothing.

Sorry to tell you this, but I just had Illustrator 7 autorun, Acrobat 3 run from install.exe, and Photoshop 5 run from setup.exe.

When you say it starts the install program, exactly what does that mean? What do you see?

YOu might also want to install the SUPPORT TOOLS. This contains an app that will let you mimick 95, 98, or NT40. This works about 60% of the time for me. It should be on the original WIN2000 CD.

Randy,

I have found very few mainstream programs that will not load on 2000 (with the exception of cd burning software)

Something must be wrong with your setup, but what This could also be why you can not install Nero 5 or your 2k machine but could on your 98 machine. Nero 5 installs on 2k without any trouble.

I would closely examine all the drivers to your hardware and make sure they are correct and up to date.

Does your machine ever blue screen?

I am getting occasional lock ups in some programs...which I worry a bit about since I was told that my memory might not be that compatible with the m/b. But they close well under W2k and not a big deal. I have not seen a blue screen.

I am signed on as Administrator. I will check into the support tools.
Thanks.

I forgot about the samsung ram. I would change this ASAP to Micron/Crucial or somthing like that.

You have a high end motherboard and dual proc setup, why have Kmart quality ram??

Ram that is not quite right would cause all this. I went through something similar years ago on a Compaq Proliant server. It wokred fine most of the time, but these odd lock ups and abend errors (it ran Novell) would pop up randomly for no reason. Took me weeks to figure out it was the Kingston ram, I mean it was the design of the ram not a bad simm. Switched Kingston ram modules 3 times, same problem, compaq level 3 support said yep that ram does not work. i thought he was full of crap, but tried the compaq ram and never had the problems again. Back then the price difference between compaq ram and kingston ram was about $2000 for 256MB. So I really wanted the kingston to work.
