teach me a bit about ebook readers, please

so, I'm thinking of getting my wife an ebook reader for Christmas...

she's not particularly computer savvy, so I was thinking the Kindle might be best, with its wireless downloadable content etc..

my question is, can you read ALL ebook material on a Kindle, not just the ones actually purchased from Amazon?

can anyone recommend something BETTER than the Kindle, and if so, what makes it better?

thanks!

Re: teach me a bit about ebook readers, please

I wouldn't recommend the Kindle simply because of the "claw-back" option that Amazon built into the device. When I buy something, I want to own it.... not wake up one morning to discover that Amazon automatically deleted a book that I purchased (and refunded my credit card). I also want a device that is more "open" in allowing other non-proprietary formats.

The latest Kindle firmware for the newer model devices now supports PDF... that's a good improvement but it seems more like a response to their competition than any product plan.

I've got my eye on the Nook and Sony eReaders. They're "better" because they don't have the restrictions of the Kindle. But I'm not buying ANY eReader until the prices drop. Still way overpriced for a unitasker.

if you want options get an iphone and install the kindle and BN ereader apps. downside is the smaller screen, but the kindle is black and white only. i see people with them on the train to work and there is no way i'd buy one over my iphone

You should probably check out this thread in the book forum:

I've been a bit tempted by the Kindle and Nook, but I think the devices will get much better and cheaper pretty quickly so I'm inclined to wait a bit more.

There is a rumor that apple will finally come out with a tablet next year. It will be color, play music, have a book and magazine store, apps and I forgot what else.

I would wait until Asus releases their dual-monitor ebook reader:

It's rumored to be coming out at the end of the year/early next year.

Microsoft is supposed to come out with one as well. In the end it's going to come down to who has the best content

Check out www.mobileread.com. It pretty much should have any and all answers to questions you might have.
