The linksys dsl router supports PPOE, this can be used to bypass the Winpoet software requirement. This means taht with this router, you can connect ANY Operating system.

Ask your DSL provider if they support this thing.

That's what I think the problem will be. Verizon probably requires the authentication of that piece of crap dynamic IP dialer.

Yup, that's the problem, Verizon has to have the iVasion WinPoET adapter installed before you can use their DSL service.

Steve worth a call to them on this one, trust me. PPPOE is a standard, it just so happens Winpoet is what they use. The linksys router is capable of the same technology. In other words the verizon system would think winpoet was connecting when really it is this router, then the router would feed IP info to windows 2000.

I have a friend in MD that have verizon DSL and this is what he did to get 2000 online before they supported it.

A quick phone call could clear it up if they answer you honestly. You can not possibly be the first to call them on this, these things are popular. If they ask why you want to use this device, tell them security, they will never know.

Even Better

Steve download and install RASPPPOE on to your windows 2000 install

http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/

this will replace winpoet for 2000 (correction winpoet version 3.0 is 2000 ready if you care, after this I wouldn't)

RASPPPOE will replace the winpoet software and tests show it to be compatable with verizon dsl. My buddy that is reaelly into the DSL scene emailed me back while he was on vacation (he is cool) he uses this with verizon here in VA, and so does his family and friends

Give it a try.

edited to add my buddy thinks winpoet is complete crap, he said your speed will even increase with RASPPPOE
