Internet glitch every midnight ?

Precisely at midnight, every midnight (afaik), my internet connection fails. If I am downloading something, the download will be broken. If I am loading a webpage, the browser will timeout and show 'cannot connect to server' type of error message. I can connect to my router 192.168.1.1 with no problem. But I just have to wait a little while (maybe 1minute or less) or retry a few times, then suddenly internet connection is back to normal again. I have DSL, using a Zyxel modem and a Linksys router. Anyone have ideas about what might be going on here?

midnight is a perfect time to do maintenance

Or your IP might release and renew at midnight.

IP's try to renew halfway through the lease. it will keep the same IP unless it's not available anymore. 99.9999% of the time there is no interruption

What does this mean? Are you saying dtcarson's theory is wrong, and that the issue is unrelated to IP release/renew?

Have you checked with your DSL provider?

No, I posted here first for help eliminating other possibilities before blaming the ISP.

Does your router have a WAN connection uptime indicator? If the router is running the whole time and there is no indication that the WAN connection was dropped, then it's almost certainly something on your ISPs end.

AFAIK, the router (Linksys WRT54GS) doesn't have a WAN uptime indicator.
I browsed through all the router menus and didn't seen anything like that.

yes

a device will try to renew the IP halfway through the lease. years ago when i managed this we would make the lease something like an hour so that we would see if something was wrong during an upgrade

if it can't renew the IP then it will assign a 169. something IP to itself

^ I agree.

I also agree with Al about maintenance, that's my suspicion.

Rebooting DSLAMs or rebooting cards during the night is something ISPs do. I've been through that, only it was at 6:00 AM daily with an AT&T DSLAM back east. Particularly DSLAMs that have an unresolved issue or a troublesome card, they reset them to reset degrading connections. I guess they decided 6 AM was better as the all-nighters were finally in bed and the morning had not started yet. The connection is re-established in short order, like you mention: something like a minute.

Most people never notice this and it's usually only online gamers and power users that do. It's a 'cheap and easy' fix for an ISP.

Whatever the cause... I think, based on what you describe, it's at the CO/ISP but not a lease/renew issue.

Or they figured out a cheap way to kill bt connections instead of buying some of the expensive crap being peddled now

Thanks guys for the helpful and insightful replies.
I'll just have to adjust and adapt.

No, you should complain to the ISP.

That's what it took for me to get the issue back east resolved. They were using a reset as a crutch on the DSLAM. I did get that resolved and stopped.

It was resolved and stopped after they either replaced the card or moved the DSL link in question to another card, and they provided an engineer to come out test everything on the client end and provided a new router in that process.

Are you microwaving something at that time every night?

jonnyquest 11-22-09 11:44 PM

Re: Internet glitch every midnight ?

No microwaving. I'm on the computer, web browsing or something. Everything going normal, then suddenly, a page takes forever to load or times out. I look at the clock and it's midnight. It's literally one of those "you could set your clock by it" kind of things.

Its the ISP. They must have some scheduled reset occurring.

Has to be systematic and ISP related if this is continually happening at the same time of day.
