For Windows, I prefer Media Player Classic.

VLC's UI is still a little clunky since it's cross platform. It's more capable in some ways, but not as easy to use, IMO.

I have tried videolan on two separate occasions and it failed both times, extreme pixelation, freezing and whatnot.

I use KM Player. It is a bit resource intensive, but comes with an EQ, brightness and sharpness controls, etc.

Re: Best free program to watch DVDs on your PC?

Some disk have copy protection that VLC can not handle and caused pixel city. I ran into this with a few disk of band of brothers. I'm not sure if the new version fixed this. This problem only came up twice on about I don't 50 dvds that I have watched off of netflix. I just use windows media player when that happens.

I'd vote for vlc. The makers keep it up to date. It plays nearly all formats. You can stream. It is very small. It is portable. Lots of options but simple if all you want to do is play a movie.
