I am searching for a new laptop and need DVD and CD-ROM, CD-RW. Nearly all of the laptops I've reviewed indicate a "6x or 8X DVD-ROM"
or "6x or 8x DVD". Does this mean the DVD drive also acts as a CD-ROM drive? If so, is the CD-ROM function also (only) 6 or 8x speed?
Does anyone make a laptop with separate DVD and CD-CD-W drives? Thanks.

DVD speeds are several times CD-ROM speeds -- about 4x. So a 6x DVD drive would probably be about 24x CD-ROM speed. Don't know about the separate drives though.

Thanks X, for the clarification of the speeds. So, if I understand this correctly, the DVD drive and the CD-ROM drive are one in the same and used for both medias?

Yes, same drive. Different speeds relative to which media.
