I'm making myself a new system and am wondering is there that much difference between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm. Am I going to notice a difference?

Also whats the deal with UDMA-100? Do i need a MB that is compatible with this? I'm assuming this is the bus rate for the direct memory addressing. do all the new drives use this?

I noticed the difference going from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm drive. you either need a motherboard that is ready for udma100 or an addon card for udma 100. I assume it will be faster than the udma 66 drive i am running but mine works fine

5400 vs 7200 - YES you will notice!!

ata66 vs ata100 - you will NOT notice a difference. But make sure you at least get an ata66 and you have an IDE controller card that also supports it (could be built into your motherboard, or may require you to buy a card)

All new drives SHOULD do this, but they are all backward compatable too, so don't worry if your drive can and your IDE interface can not.
