What's wrong with my digital camera?

I turned on my digital camera yesterday after not using it for awhile. I couldn't get the camera to focus correctly. Anything up close wouldn't focus on manual or automatic focus. I figured maybe my lens had broke so I put on my other lens. The exact same thing happened. Objects far away look fine but anything up close is completely blurry. What is wrong with my camera? It's a Canon 40d.

You may want to check over at www.dpreview.com , in the Canon section.

Is it possible that your diopter is out of whack?

Is the focus problem only through the viewfinder, or does it also occur with the digital image when you've taken the picture?

how close is close?

Can you manually focus the lens up close?

Re: What's wrong with my digital camera?

oh yeah, do you have a second lens to try? know anyone w/a Canon that you can try the lens with? Go to a camera store w/it and try or even Best Buy. That way you'll know if it's the camera or lens that has the problem.

Not sure about your lens, but some of mine have a setting on the lens that changes how close the lens can focus.

It's not the diopter. I'm not a rookie.
I own multiple lenses. Their all doing the same thing.

If I put two pill bottles on a table. One up close and one far back my camera will only focus the back bottle. No matter how I turn the lens the back bottle always stays in focus while the one upfront is always blurry.

Sounds like your camera needs repair.

Never heard of such an issue w/the camera.

Should go into the shop. The only time I've seen problems with that is if the contacts are dirty or the focusing screen is out of place.

There's a little switch on the side of the camera that opts for manual focus or automatic focus. Check the setting.

Re: What's wrong with my digital camera?

This is a DSLR so I'd doubt it was a battery problem. My suggestion, if it's not the diopter, is that maybe you're trying to focus on something that's just too close for any of your lenses, but then again, you said you're not a rookie? Have you tried manually setting the lens for a focus distance of a given number of feet, and taken a picture to see if whatever that item is is correctly in focus?

Also, the suggestion to clean the lens contacts is a good one.

Interesting... You ask for suggestions, yet you seem to take offense when they are offered. We are trying to help you...

Having multiple lenses all doing the same thing doesn't mean it's not the diopter.

On top of that, you didn't answer my question about the problem. Is the lack of focus limited to the viewfinder, or is it also present in the images?

Re: What's wrong with my digital camera?

Maybe you changed the focus point of the camera? That would answer why it happens on all your lenses...

I might suggest resetting to factory presets. You might have done a shot with "aperture fixed" or whatever they call it on the Canon menu.

Do you have the 40D in AI-Servo mode? Not sure if this makes any difference, but thought I'd ask.

Have you tried to completely reset the camera.

Pull the battery out, recharge it, and let the DSLR sit for about an hour without any battery in it. Press and hold the shutter button for about 20 secs to completely discharge any power. Also, disconnect any lenses. Disconnect any battery grip.
