Anyone having problems updating AVG Free v 8.0.138?

I keep getting a message saying I'm missing a .bin file and it won't update. I un-installed and reinstalled the program and I still get the same message.

Anyone?

Hmm..I just tried to update and got the same. Guess I should leave well enough alone. I had an autoscan yesterday that worked fine. Maybe it's something in the update package.

Ok, then it's not just me. I guess we'll see what's up soon enough.

I get the same message about the missing bin file and have tried several times today to update manually but there seems to be a problem with AVG's servers.

Don't do this unless you're familiar with AVG and your PC, but couldn't you download the bin as a separate file and have AVG update from the bin file. Also, maybe delete your current bin file and then import the newer bin file.

If I could make a suggestion, try a better free antivirus product: Avira.

It's free just like AVG, only it's far superior at detection and removal, that's not just my opinion.

My wife was recently getting an error message with her AVG service, but I can't recall what specific problem she was having.

This is as good a time as any to remind people that AVG routinely finishes near the bottom of the antivirus shootouts. Try Avast or some other free AV that actually works.

?
I've always heard good/very good, not superb, things about AVG. According to AV-Comparatives.org, http://www.av-comparatives.org/, AVG got Advanced+ and Advanced in their last two tests; Avast got Advanced+ and Standard. Looks like the best, according to them, is Avira (though they list Premium, not necessarily the free version). Windowssecrets.com says "[Avast's] poor performance on the most recent VB100 tests and relatively low Standard rating by AV-Comparatives moves Avast! down a few notches on my list. I look forward to reviewing a future version of the program, however."
I've got no problem comparison shopping, I'm going to try Avira. I think I tried Avast a while back, and I didn't like something about it (but I can't recall what, it was years ago, and admittedly whatever it was might not even be an issue anymore.)
