Help with networking two PCs

I have two pcs both on the same wired router. I am trying to set it up so I can access one or more of the hard drives on one of the PCs from the other computer. I just can't get it to work. Both are running Windows Professional XP. If I use the network setup wizard, the computers reboot and then both just hang. Once I reboot them they are fine but I still don't have access to the other computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Also in the end I need to set it up so it is at least password protected since I share my connection with roommates.

The PCs are already networked, you'll want to share a folder though:

They weren't though because I couldn't see them or access them. I finally got it to complete where I could even see the default empty shared folder which I couldn't access or see before.

Now is there anything I need to do so that only these two computers can see each other and access the content? I don't want it left open for anyone such as my roommates to be able to access.

The link I posted with shared folder permissions in the URL would have such info.
