How to build a neighborhood network?

A co-worker is on the HOA board of his gated community. He is looking into creating a wireless broadband network for the community and getting a bulk discount. There are 200-300 houses, so he'd probably be getting about 100 customers. If he finds a reasonably cheap way to do it, he'll make a proposal to the board.

Has anyone set up something like this before? Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's probably going to end up taking a small tower or leasing space on an existing cell tower and it certainly isn't going to be cheap. It's going to need commercial grade equipment and something like multiple T1 lines or a fiber connection to feed the main transmitter. That's going to be hundreds of dollars a month for bandwidth. Plus he will have to buy antennas for all the customers, mount them on the houses and run lines inside to their PC's if they want strong reliable service. Might want to search Google for some professional services or contractors that do this sort of thing.

This is of course if he wants it done right.

price of space on cell towers can be very high... surprisingly so... that's true... but that is not a necessity and may not even be an issue...

but if a nice aesthetic tower were built... something along the lines of those at Rio Grande and I-40 there at the Old Town exit... it could be done for less overall... just for one example... but that may not be necessary...

you could start service with a T-1... even large companies like Clearwire do this... i helped them launch in ABQ...

usage is a big thing... when somebody starts bot downloading torrents all day it throws the whole thing off... for one example... has to be considered...

you could put wireless access points in several locations... if this is out on the west side where it's flat it'll need a few more... up in like Tanoan, and the slope coming off of Tramway helps some...

here is a link on just what your post is about... Link on neighborhood WISP...

this is a link to a WiFi forum... you could get info there i suspect... WiFi-Forums...

lots of info on google of course...

You will want to set up a mesh wireless network. Tropos and Belair Networks are 2 vendors of this technology. Do a search for them.
