School Me On Laptop Memory

So I bought a Dell Vostro the other day and it came with 1 gig memory. I'm going to upgrade the memory obviously. Now my question is I've gotten different stories on what types of memory sticks are compatible and what not. Someone told me that I could just buy a 2gig stick, take out the one 52 memory and run it so it'd be 2.5gig of memory. I was originally plannig to buy two 2gigs of memory sticks Now on the crucial website when i was researching what type of memory my laptop takes it shows that I SHOULD replace both memory sticks b/c it's got dual-channel memory configurations for optimal performance. Now is that just mumbo jumbo to get a person to spend more or does that have any validity?

Should I still buy 4 gigs of memory even though my laptop can only use 3gigs or can I save myself a few bucks by just buying one 2 gig stick? Thanks

Yes you should install identical modules in pairs

4GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 - should be around $100, what are you really saving by putting in less memory? Ebay off the 1gb stick.

What is the reason for pairing up the size of memory?

Vostro = dual-channel memory configurations for optimal performance, as stated in the OP

Not all are the same, but for $90 shipped, lifetime warranty, you can't beat this for a Vostro

last question. My laptop came with a pc2-5300 so CAN i put in something that shows 6400, which I believe is 800mhz even though it'll knock it back down to 667mhz? Or is it better for the laptop to stick with the 5300? I've also seen ones that shows 5400 as well.
