Need help from a Mac user re: icons

I want to change my hard disk icon, but I can't figure out how to do it. I have a png file I want to use, and when I do "get info" on it and the hard disk and paste the icon into the hard disk get info window, I get a little icon that says "png" instead of the actual icon. What the hell?

does the icon show up on the desktop? are you logged in as an admin user?

No, not logged in as admin, but I temporarily gave myself read & write access to the hard disk.

I don't understand your first question. Are you asking if the actual icon image file shows up on the desktop? If so, yes. It does not replace the hard disk icon- I'm getting a generic "png" or "jpeg" icon instead.

Sounds like your png doesn't actually have an icon attached. The system is just generating a real-time one. Try opening the png up in Preview, select all or make a selection. Copy and then paste into the Get Info window of your hard disk.

That worked. Thanks!
