Is constant power required to retain on-board memory?

I'm looking to buy a hand-held digital voice recorder. Something that would allow me to transfer files to my computer and back. I saw a brand called Lingo; the description said it had on-board memory. Is this similar to flash memory? Or will I lose my files if the batteries give out?

Looking at sites that carry this brand, "on-board" in this case appears to be another way of saying "built-in" memory, as in memory that's not on a removable media. Odds are highly likely that it's flash memory, but I couldn't find a manufacturer's website or any spec sheet to confirm.

Thanks for the response. I finally found their website (lingotranslators.com) and e-mailed them, asking if the batteries die, do I lose everything I've recorded? Their reply: "Yes, you would not maintain the recordings."
