What happened to Windows XP SP3?

I think there were some pre release versions of the SP3 in the early fall of 2007 and it was supposed to be out in January 2008 for sure.I'm waiting to do a reformat & fresh install but my computer is getting crankier by the week.Does anyone know the status of this service pack?

No idea. Microsoft still says 1H 2008.

This link is the road map.

I've read that the release candidates for Windows XP Service Pack 3 will probably come out within the next few months.

Release has been out for a bit...if I recall from my Microsoft rep, there was a security rollup that was pending, hence the slow down of SP3

I know that OEMs are getting SP3, but do you all think it will be made available via retail outlets like Newegg (i.e., SP3 integrated into the install CD)? I'm thinking about picking up another license, and it might as well be the most recent version of XP.

Maybe newegg will have it in a couple weeks.

Surprised how quick the download was, just a few minutes. Install took few minutes, too. Will check things before making new slipstream cd.

Ditto what Ranger said.

So far (about 1 hour in), I see no difference between SP2 and SP3. That's a really good thing.

I tried 2 of the SP 3 RC's (2254 & 3300) but my Compaq would not restart and was stuck in perpetual reboot mode.I had to go into safe mode to remove them. This was with a brand new format and install and had nothing else installed.I hope these issues are taken care of in the final release.

I believe the perpetual reboot issue was something addressed in the previous RC and shouldn't be a problem with the Final.

However, if you're doing a clean install anyway, you should save time and space by integrating SP3 into your install CD.

I can't even install SP2. It says my Windows is not verified or something of that sort. I had this computer built locally for me. Anyway I can bypass this? It seems that more and more things that I try and download, it won't let me because it goes through this verification check.

i've heard a lot of local mom and pop computer shops use fake versions of windows with fake keys

you can call MS and they will ask where you bought your copy of windows. if enough people complain they will sue that store out of existence.

SP3 via Windows Update has been delayed due to some incompatibility issue:

Microsoft is delaying the release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP users due to a "compatibility issue" with the bundle of updates and a supply-chain solution the company markets to small- and medium-sized businesses. The software giant had previously said SP3 would be released to XP customers today via Windows Update and its software download center.

In a written statement, Microsoft said:

"In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.

Meh, their Remote Desktop client is ok, but since I started using Terminals, I haven't been back. For those not in the know, Terminals is a self contained Remote Desktop client that allows you to tab your Remote Desktops in a single window. For IT admins and workers, this is a godsend.
