Sound problem

There is a thunderstorm going on in my area, and power just went out in my apartment complex for a few minutes. I was on the computer at the time. After the power came on, I am now getting a loud shrieking sound from the speakers whenever I listen to music or watch a video. WTF happened? Is my sound card toast?

Okay... I went into the control panel -> sound and audio devices, and turned off hardware acceleration. That caused the PC to lock up, so I manually rebooted, and now the shrieking seems to be gone. I went back to the sound device, turned the hardware acceleration back on, and the shrieking did not come back. Weird.
