DVD drive doesn't automatically acknowledge disc (CDs, etc.)

Strange... If I put a disc (CD, DVD, etc.) in my drive, it doesn't show up in Windows Media Player until I look at the drive in an explorer window. As an example, if I don't have any explorer windows open, and I insert a disc, and then I run WMP, the option "Play->DVD, VCD or Audio CD" is grayed out. If I 'explore' the drive before running WMP, it will show up just fine. Some software doesn't have this problem, for example, Exact Audio Copy. Also, after going to Exact Audio Copy, WMP will then see the CD. Results are similar for other media types, as well.

It will also often say 'insert a disc in Drive H:' when I first go to explore it, although the disc is already in.

I've also tried with and without autoplay set for the drive.

FWIW, it's a Samsung SH-S162L. It's an excellent drive, but this is driving me up the wall.

Any ideas?

the first thing i would do is boot into safe mode... this HAS to be done in safe mode... i'll spare you the 'whys' and 'whats'...

go to device manager... start>run>(clear out anything in text box) type 'devmgmt.msc' (no quotes) click 'ok'...

go to 'dvd/cd-rom drives'... click the plus sign... delete every instance there(right click, choose delete, yes to question)... leave 'dvd/cd-rom drives' blank...

reboot... this will force XP to re-install a new driver from CAB's...

test...

I did all of the above, and it behaves in the same manner...

I also noticed that if I run WMP (11), and quit it, and then run it again, it notices the CD as WMP is starting up.

good work...

now run a repair to make sure the OS is in order to talk to the device...

start>run>(clear anything) 'cmd(no quotes) click 'ok...

type 'sfc /scannow' (no quotes) hit 'enter'...

let it run...

if it prompts for XP cd insert it... that's a bad sign...

after repair...

test again...
