Got a Garmin GPS system: Why don't my POIs show up on the map?

Hey guys,

I just picked up a Garmin 200W GPS system and I love it so far, other than this one problem. Aren't the POIs (Points of interest) supposed to show up on the map? None are showing up at all.
For instance, I downloaded a custom POI for all Target stores and downloaded it to my GPS. I would assume if I'm passing a target store, I should see a symbol on the map, or I should at least get a voice notification that there is one close by. Is this not the case? If not, what's the point of the POIs?

Thanks for any help!!

Nope, your Garmin won't do that. The point of POI's is to be able to search for them at any time. It won't announce them while you're going by though.

Actually I don't think that's true. I know that if you have a speed trap POI loaded, it will alert you when you're coming up on one. However I believe it has to be turned on when you load them, and you can adjust how far away you have to be for an alert.

Hmm, thanks for the info. I'll look more into that and see if I can figure it out.

I believe the option is set in the POILoader program. When you upload them there is an alert option or something to that effect. I'm not at home to give you more details.

A Speed Trap POI? It's no radar detector but that's a great idea. I really need to look into these GPS-thinga-ma-bops.

You have to be in "2-D" mode to see PIO, not "3-D" mode

I don't think it will announce it, but it should show up on the screen. I have a different model than you do, but try hitting the + button one time, in 2D mode and that should bring up all the POI's on the map.

In 3D mode, the POI's that I personally enter show up as I drive, but the preloaded ones don't.
