Blue Screen of death - help
 
I have Dell Dimension C521 since last year November (pre-Vista). I had no problem with it when it run on XP version. When I bought the Vista and I have been getting the blue screen of death whenever I shut down the computer. Sometimes I get that during using the computer - like this:

From what I understand it has to do something with computer memory. I'm not really clear what really caused - hardware failure or not set up the hardware properly or something else.

Can anyone help me with solution to that problem?

see if this works - start - run - type eventvwr.msc for the event viewer. check what errors were reported around the times of the bsod.

check dell if there's new drivers for vista.

edit: also, check if there's new updates for your anti-virus/firewall software.

I got that error when I installed new memory in my PC. If you installed new RAM, either it is incompatible or not pushed into the slot all the way.

you have to download windebug, the symbols and then import your memory dump file into it and it will tell you what is wrong. or search by the error code in the knowledge base

my guess is you probably upgraded to Vista instead of installing from scratch and this is a driver problem

Yes, I am guessing a driver error as well. Video or something screwing with power management maybe since it is occuring on shut down.

Do anyone think that it might caused by "non-Dell" Vista O/S? When I was reinstalling my sister's Dell laptop with my unused Windows XP, it won't let me install it unless I get the O/S directly from Dell. It popped up with blue screen, but the message is different from pic I post above. The Vista I got wasn't from Dell, I bought it at store.

I ran Event Viewer, it did say "The device, \Device\Harddisk4\DR4, has a bad block." at about the time I got blue screen.

I bought additional memory before I get Vista, the new memory is exact same as what Dell installed - exact same brand, model number, same amount. I can try switch it places and see what happened.

This screams to me that you need to run a hard drive diag, and not the light weight dell one alone. Meaning run the dell diags first, but if they come up clean pull the hard drive and see who made it and run the manufacturers diags on it.
