Has anyone built an HTPC for DVD consolidation?

I'm moving into a new apartment and will not be able to bring all of my dvds with me. I have roughly 1300 and have been granted the space that will, I believe, hold 1000. The other 300 will be moved into my storage unit with a lot of my furniture and whatnot. (Worst case scenario is bringing them to the apartment and putting them into dvd binders, which I'd rather not do... it's killed many a cd in the past for me.)

That said, I'm starting to think about building an HTPC on which I can have access to those 300 dvds that will be placed in storage. I have no questions regarding ripping or anything like that. I am just curious if anyone has done the same kind of thing and, if so, if you have any suggestions, advice, etc.

Thanks for the help!
