XP home media, apple tv, TIVO or other

Please let me know what you believe would be my best option to record shows. Thanks

I think you're going to need to provide more details: HD or not? Cable or satellite? Is price a concern?

IIRC, to actually record shows, Apple TV would be completely out. It doesn't record.

HD no satellite or cable. Price not a real concern

Series3 HD Tivo

In that case, I agree with Draven: either the TiVoHD or a TiVo Series 3.

I have the Series 3 TiVo and only use it for OTA HD recordings. It's works great. It's even better now that TiVoToGo has been enabled, allowing content to be transfered to your computer as well as from your computer.

I agree, for the seamless integration.

I went with a mac mini with a HD tuner. The integration is not as seamless (and thus the tuner/recorder gets used less) but I get streaming music, games, dvd player and other goodness.

I use a standalone digital video recorder. No need to pay TiVo fees.

I wasn't happy using the computer for a couple reasons. It would have to be on to do the recording, the quality wasn't as good as the standalone, I would have to watch on the computer or burn a DVD to watch the program, etc.

The standalone recorder is also great for converting old VHS recordings into DVDs.

Couldn't one get the tivo, manually set record times without paying any fees?

Unless you can find either a Series 1 or a TiVo DVD recorder with TiVo Basic (both of which are pretty much only available anymore on eBay), that'd be a "no".
