Is there a standard for photo CD's ?

I want to put a big collection of photos on CD and
give the CD's out to attendees at a reunion. Is there
a software or particular format or scheme or something
I should use to ensure these CD's can be played in
most people's standalone DVD players ?

There's a standard called (surprise, surprise) Photo CD, but it never really gained all that much traction in consumer electronics devices. Most DVD players will happily let you flip through a standard data CD or DVD full of .JPG photos, but not all.

There's also a way to convert digital pictures into MPEG-2 files, but it's an insane amount of work. I'm talkin' hours and hours of conversion and playing with DVD authoring software.

It might be worth your while to ask a few folks from the reunion what model DVD players they have. I think that most DVD players actually *do* support PhotoCD (I know that all of mine do, except for an ancient Tosh model I have). It'd be *much* easier to create a PhotoCD than a "picture DVD" that would work universally.
