Help - can't play mp3 or video files

Suddenly my PC is not playing any audio or video files. When I run a mp3 in winamp, it looks like it is about to play but just sits there .. Attempting anything in media player 11 gets a "file busy" message .. Nothing is running that would be using these files, and a system scan came up clean.

message that comes up is "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

I just attempted to do a restore to a restore point from a week ago - even that gave me an error and did not complete the restoration

anything else I should be looking for?

anyone?

HP is telling me that the only solution they know is a system restore ... I'd rather do that as a last resort.

al - the problem also occurs when I use other media players .. When I created a new user account I could play files in winamp but still not media player.
