computer problems - toolbar/notification area (?)

Sometime last night, as soon as I plugged in an USB flash drive, my computer crashed. Since then, it works fine except that the "notification area" in the bottom right of the toolbar, doesn't load everything that it used to. It only loads MSN Messenger. Also, I can't open AIM anymore. And, I can't log into MSN messenger. I've tried rebooting, system restore and a couple of other things, but nothing fixes it. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

by notification area.. are you talking about the systray? down near the clock?
when you reboot, everything you expect to be there, isnt?
try ctrl-alt-del and task manager and see if the process is actually running first..
if they are running and not showing up, thats one thing.. and could explain the issue opening aim, if its actually already running int he background.

if they arent running.. then what error do you get when you launch aim.. and what other aims arent showing up? what error do you get when you try to launch them?
