Anyone else have to frequently reinstall AVG free?

Every couple of months the system tray icon turns gray saying the database is out of date. Trying to update it results in an error:
Can not initialize the update interface. Installation of AVG Free is probably damaged. Please reinstall AVG Free.

Perhaps you deleted a folder or some temp stuff it's looking for. Maybe the temp folder needs to be cleaned.

I might give this a shot, but it could screw up other programs.

It could be a permissions problem or something on their end.

When it turns grey all you have to do is manually update it. It is probably a problem with your firewall or connection.

I gave up on AVG for Avast. I could not figure out how to stop it from marking files as viruses that I knew were clean.

I've had a similar problem with AVG free. I don't remember getting that exact error, but it would always ask me to reboot after an update, and then stay "greyed out" and ask for another reboot.

Looking online, it seems like the update can get corrupted, so there's actually an option to remove the last update and go download it again.

Failing that, I have to remove it completely.

This happens only on my wife's laptop, which does not stay constantly on and hibernates when closed. My other laptop, which is always plugged in, has never had this problem.
