Best scanner to transfer text documents?

I have a bunch of Xeroxed newspaper articles that I'd like to scan in and transfer to text documents (They're articles my dad wrote in the 80's, and we hold the copyrights - I hope that's not an issue vis a vis the forum rules...) I'd appreciate any advice regarding personal scanners that do a good job with recognizing text, especially when it's a little sketchy. I'd like to stay under $600 if possible... any ideas?

Any new scanner will do fine. What is more important is the OCR software.
If you can find a scanner that comes with Omnipage, you're good to go
