Help with possible video card problem

While browsing the internet today, my PC started locking up for periods of 3-4 seconds at a time, followed by the display going black, then coming back on and returning to normal. My first thought was that a reboot would fix it, but I'm still seeing this same problem quite often. I have an Nvidia 6800GT video card, and when I try to adjust the clock frequencies (either through the Nvidia control panel or RivaTuner) the card fails the tests at all frequencies, even the factory settings... but I loaded up Counter-Strike Source and was able to play just fine. What does this problem sound like? Is my video card going bad, or could it be a memory issue? Any suggestions to fix this short of buying new hardware? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
