Need Help Defaulting Laptop To External Monitor

I'm trying to get my Dell laptop to send video output to my external Dell monitor. Ideally I want to work off the external monitor and shut my laptop lid. I believe I'm using Windows XP Pro. I've tried doing it going thru Control Panel, Settings, but have been unsuccessful. Any help is appreciated.

Look on your keyboard. There is usually a function key combination to switch the output. For example, on my Dell Inspiron it is Fn F8.

This would best be accomplished with a dock. Your laptop would know when it was docked and the video would go to the external monitor automatically. Also, you would save time and wear and tear on your ports by not having to connect and disconnect the monitor/kb/mouse from the laptop all the time. What model of Dell notebook do you have?

It's a Dell Latitude. I do currently dock the laptop, but for some reason it doesn't default to the external monitor that I connected to the dock. I'll call my co.'s IT help desk on Monday if I can't get it to work.
