Need help, how much is this system "worth"?

My Mother in Law is thinking of buying this system. It is a year old. It is complete crap, imo in terms of the specs. What is it worth? I've begged her to let me pick out a system for her, we'll see if she takes me up on it.

She wants to surf the web, use a handful of programs, no graphics work to speak of and no nothing processor intensive.

A Celeron/motherboard/case/512MB is probably worth about $150.
Power cord - $450. Oh wait, that's a power cord priced for audiophiles. Make that $2.
Keyboard, mouse, modem (often free after rebate), CD-ROM, maybe $40.
80GB drive - $40.
17" LCD displays are going for under $100.
Don't know about the software.

So $332? You should be able to get a new and better machine bundled for around that if you look well enough.

The software bundle makes pricing that system a bit difficult, since the upgrades to XP Professional and Office 2003 Small Business typically run a combined $150+ through Dell. That could easily go over $200 if that's the full version of Acrobat 6.0 and not just the Reader.

I think X is being a little generous with his pricing, but only because he's going by individual component costs. The specs don't specify whether or not that is the small desktop or minitower case, but that system is a base configuration in every respect, including the LCD, which is VGA only. The minitowers tend to fetch a bit more because of the additional PCI slots.

It is 1 year used. She's interested in purchasing it from her employer. Seems like unless they're willing to give it for about $250-$300 it is a waste.

That's the most I would pay for it, if I bought Celerons.

Yeah, a used celery...I don't think it's worth more than $200. And that's only because it comes with a 17" lcd.

$250 - 300 sounds about right. Especially with Dell offering solid Athlon 64 systems these days for under $400.
