problem with dupe files in ITunes

When I add folders to ITunes, sometimes I'll accidentally add the same folder more than once. Apparently ITunes then renames the songs using a strange renaming system.

Example: (01 Mysterious World.mp3) becomes (01 Mysterious World 1.mp3) and so on.

I got MarkelSoft Dupe Eliminator to clean up my IPod, but unfortunately every criteria it uses to find dupes is based around the name and then something else. So since all of the names in ITunes are unique, it doesn't find the majority of the dupes....

Couldn't find another program out there worth installing...

Can someone tell me if there is a program out there that will fix this without having to manually do it? It's an 80GB Ipod which is nearly full so that would be impossible to do manually.

THanks

There was a freeware program called dupeless that was out oh maybe 8 years ago that was really good. I could find dupes of stuff even if the files had different names.

Well how are the Import preferences set in iTunes? If you have "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" selected this shouldn't happen. If it's not selected it won't check to see if it's in your library already and add will another version. When it adds the second version it is appending a number to the name to avoid overwriting the other file. If you have "... Organized" selected you'll get prompted if it finds dupes when importing and ask how you want to handle it.

I have always had the "Keep .. Organized" checked, so I don't think that does anything with regard to this. I assume it's the "Copy Files to ITunes Music Folder" option that is killing me. I have to have that checked because I pull my files in from various drives both network and external. It must just recopy things over and over with no regard to what's already there.

That's weird and must be a Windows flaw. On my Mac it doesn't do that.
