Need help: Windows XP shutdown stalling

Hey Guys
I could use some input on this. For the last month I've been experiencing some problems shutting down Windows XP. Once I get ready to shut down my computer, the screen says "Windows is Shutting Down" and then it just stalls there. I end up holding the power button on my PC to get the thing to finally turn off. On occasion, the PC will end up shutting down correctly, but this stalling seems to be happening more frequently. Any ideas on what the issue is? My Gateway computer is relatively new (bought it in March 2006)

I tried calling Gateway and they said I should just back up all my important files and then do a complete re-installation of my operating system. That seems like a very drastic measure.
