Light Saber advice...

I've noticed that sometimes when someone is hit with a light saber, they vanish altogether. Sometimes it slices off someone's hand at the wrist. Other times, it slices through handcuffs to free the person. They can also cut through what appears to be really strong metal. So are there various settings on the standard light saber, or is it that a light saber does whatever the person wielding it wants it to do when they are using the power of the Force?

Although I've known about light sabers since about 1976, when I was six years old, this is sort of new technology to me.

Any opinions are welcome.

Edit to add some context to my request...On Cinemax, they have had a mega marathon of Star Wars movies this week. I've seen them all in passing throughout the week, and I've noticed the various ways the light saber is used.

Maybe you should ask this at the forums on theforce.net.

True, but I'm not a member over there.

The ones that make people disappear are Macs; the ones that make a bloody mess are Windows-based.

the reason obi wan disappeared is the same reason that yoda did
they became one with the force
it had nothing to do with the light sabre other than it killed him

You have to update the firmware to version 3.5 to get the, "person I killed disappearing with one swipe" effect. Otherwise, you just chop stuff off.

BTW, mikehunt is actually right

I checked, but couldn't find the user manual that came with mine. I would check the actual unit itself, but I sent it in under warranty repair. Unfortunately, UPS left it at the front door, and one of the apartment neighbors stole it.

If you want to become a true Jedi, you should build your own lightsaber. There is a kit for sale if you want them, and it's cheaper than the ready to use one!

Except, of course, that both Qui-Gon and Darth Vader pulled the same trick, yet their bodies remained. So, in other words, it's what the screenwriter's wanted it to do.

Maybe Qui-Gon and Anakin/Vader haven't learned how to make their body “disappeared.”

Remember at the end of ROTS, Yoda said he would teach Obi-Wan what Qui-Gon has taught him how to communicate with Qui-Gon. I can assume that Qui-Gon has taught them (Yoda/Obi-Wan) how to make their body “disappeared.”

How could Qui-Gon teach Yoda something he didn't know how to do himself?

He would have learned while he's with midi-chlorians (or dead spiritually, whatever).

qui gon apparently learned it after death, plus he wasn't prepared for feath like obi wan and yoda were
we don't actually know what happened to the biological part of vader
weh we last saw any flesh he might not have been actually dead yet, and at the funeral scene it was his suit which was almost entirely robotic

I just want to see how far the apologists will go to try and make the glaring inconsistancies work.

although in Obi Wan's case I believe that Vader was using a dull lightsaber which wasn't even able to cut through Obi Wan's robes.

Which begs the question: do lightsabers need to be sharpened from time to time?
