How do I safely share my hard drive?

I have an open WiFi connection throughout the house I haven't sat down and figured out how to encrypt it. I want to share a hard drive with the whole house but I want it to be password-protected. Is this doable?

Also, tips on how to encrypt a wifi connection? I know how to get to my router's page.

Thanks!

I don't know about passwords, but you are supposed to be able to hide a shared drive or directory by placing a dollar sign at the end of the name. This may solve your problem, as you have to know the exact drive / directory name to be able to map to it.

This isn't working for me, though. When I put a dollar sign at the end, I can still see the shared drive on the network, it's just got a dollar sign at the end of the name. ANyone know how to get that working?
