Athlon64 3000 vs Sempron64 3400

So I have two processors sitting in front of me ... an Athlon64 3000 and a Sempron 3400 (with unadvertised 64 bit support).

My suspicion is that the Athlon will solidly outperform to Sempron, even though it lacks in clock speed. Thoughts?

If you have the 64 bit support activated I think the Sempron will be the one to go with. That particular Sempron is much better than the normal crippled low end processors. I don't have any benchmarks in front of me, but I'm betting the Sempron will very slightly beat the Athlon despite its smaller cache.

The one thing I forgot to mention is that this is a socket 939 Sempron 3400 ... only 128kb of cache but with full dual channel ram support.

The A64 is also socket 939, venice core.

The rating I was looking at was for the socket 754 version of the Sempron. 128kb is a pretty small cache. I'm thinking the A64 with the 512kb cache may be your better choice especially if you overclock it. You overclock it to 2.2 GHZ and you pretty much have a A64 3400+.

I would say that it will vary specifically with the task at hand.

I would also say that in real time use (meaning not a benchmark) you would be very hard pressed to tell any difference at all between the two processors.

Even some benchmarks would probably have them at equal performance levels and in some cases the Sempron 3400 would win.

Yeah, if you're comfortable with overlocking, the Venice chips are excellent at it and you may be able to get to 2.2 - 2.4 GHz.
