Best way/software to transfer old computer to new computer?

Bought a new laptop and I want to transfer all my stuff over to it (or at least pick and choose what to mess with). I thought I had ordered some software to do that, but I guess I didn't. What is the best thing to use?

Network or Flash Drive would be the easiest I think; all else, burn CDs/DVDs of what you want to keep or backup.

I assume you are talking about doing that just for files, but don't programs normally need to be installed?

So you are saying you don't have the discs the software came on to install them on the new PC?

Aloha Bob PC Relocator. I've never used it but I've heard many good things about it.

Dell has software for this. Don't know how reliable it is though.

Yeah, they do.

What you need to do is when you download *.exe installers, keep them somewhere and don't just delete them from your hard drive after you've used them. Makes life a lot easier when you upgrade your computer or have to do a system restore. Not only do you have all of your programs on-hand when you need them, but you'll also have a record of all of the drivers and codecs and other stuff like that that you'll want to have handy. (A lesson I learned the hard way a few years back.)

As for you files, it's probably easiest just to copy them all to CDs or DVDs and them put them on your new system.

How much "stuff" are we talking about, kvrdave. I'm assuming your laptop has an ethernet port, so all I would do is grab a handy Cat5 cable and setup a network. If that seems too complicated, then possibly burn to DVD?
