at wits end: virtual office solutions anyone?

I'm looking for......

- hosted office based solution (word & excel compatible)
- hosted email solution (outlook is optimal but not essential)
- hosted virtual disk drive solution (necessary to be able to save to this disk drive from within any program)

Anyone know of something that combines all of that?

Well I've been using Google spreadsheets for awhile now and really like it. It's not as in-depth as Excel, but Excel compatible and very user friendly. gMail is also compatible with Outlook, and I like the threaded conversations which help to unclutter the inbox.

The others I don't have any other advice. How about X-drive for online storage?

Isn't Windows Live or whatever it's called going to do that?

You can try it out now.

Oh, it's Office Live.

http://officelive.microsoft.com/

They'll give you a free domain name too, and you know GallantPig.com is available.

For some reason I totally ignored this when I ran into it yesterday. When I saw the MS logo and it was on an MS site, I just kept on going.

I'm signed up into it. So far it's pretty neat. I guess the only thing I'm not seeing is the ability to actually use Word and Excel apps. It seems it has tools built similar to those, but they are very template based. I'm still playing around with it though.

Google Spreadsheets is great. If they had the same thing as Word, and the ability to hook up your own email address into their web based email software, and also GDrive, and then linked together in a business environment, I'd be in heaven.

I tried X-Drive but I think my firewall isn't liking it. I am using Google Drive though, and it works pretty good, except I can't save things to it from within an application.

I'm being very picky but I want all of these things hooked together and not pieced together. Isn't there some sort of virtual office portal system that has all of this stuff?

Further examination of Live Office. It's not bad. It's a little bit too much hand holding and tons of shit I'd never need. Basically I just want an online app for Word (compatible), Excel (compatible), Outlook (any good webmail is fine), in an evironment with multiple users, where we can share these files, or set privacy restrictions. All of it must be accessible without having Word or Excel on your computer, and savable online. ThinkFree is the closest I've come to what I need, except it lacks webmail of any sort.

Any idea what Live will cost after the Beta?

BTW - I thought I had read somewhere that Google was planning an online word processing application.

Their site says "Starting at $29.95/month after beta".

GP, I wanted to let you know that Google and Writely have joined forces and now you can access Writely through Google docs.

Along with Google spreadsheets and gMail, I think now you are covered.

XDrive blows. We've had an account at the office for a few years, but half the time you coudln't logon, or it was slow as shit.
