Coping/backing up OS, what program to use?

What is the best program to use to make a copy of the contents of my HD (OS and all) for use later on in case something bad happens and i have to reformat?

I'm trying to avoid a situation similar to the one i just had where I was left with no way to restore my system. Pretty much I just want to make a copy of my HD contents *NOW* and use this as a starting point for any future restoring.

Also, would it be better to store my info on an external HD or on CD/DVD's?

Acronis TrueImage. If you have two drives it might be a little quicker/more convenient to restore the image from a slave drive than a burned DVD, though if you're slave drive gets damaged at the same time you'd be screwed.

I use Ghost 2003. I always make periodic backups to another drive and then copy them immediately to DVDs that I usually try to store offsite. If I have a fire, having backups along with the computers wouldn't help too much.

All the interim backups I've done to other drives were clogging them up so I burned them to over 50 DVDs last weekend. Now I feel confident that if I missed something going bad and ended up backing up the bad file with one of my periodic backups I'll find the good version of it in one of those.

Well, i really only need to make a single backup copy of my OS and not really any periodic backups.

I pretty much need to make my own recovery disc, but i figure a copy of HD contents would be cheaper.

Is there a way to copy my HD contents to an external drive and have it saved as an image file or something? I have an external drive but my plan was to use it to store music/movies/pictures and not really a place to store an exacte copy of my current HD.

Ghost will save an image to a hard drive. It will create a boot disk/disc too.

I think 2003 is the best. I've tried 10 and didn't really like it.

I think you can get 2003 pretty cheap.
