Anti-Virus Scanners

I've been using Norton for several years now and my current version (2004) is no longer supported. I was going to upgrade to 2006, but then I read all the horrifying reviews at Amazon. So that's out. So now I need suggestions for a new anti-virus program. Any recommendations? It doesn't have to be free - I don't mind paying if it does a good job.

Also, I could use suggestions for a good firewall. I used to have the Windows Security Center one, but I think it must have been deleted or something, because I never see the warnings or update alerts anymore. Right now I'm kind of a sitting duck, so I need to armor-up right quick.

AVG is a great freeware anti-virus program.

Zone Alarm is a decent freeware firewall, but not sure how well it stacks up against other ones.

I like Mcafee all-in-one, it has antivirus and a firewall and seems to be working pretty good for me.

I've tried Norton, Mcafee, Kapersky, AVG, etc.

None of them have been as good as Trend Micro. It doesn't slow down the system in the slightest (like Norton does) and does a great job.

ZoneAlarm would be my suggestion for a "right now" software firewall, but I would suggest a router for a hardware filewall.

Thanks for the suggestions....I have Norton on my system, but it annoys me at times. I may try one of these other ones. Avast seems like an option.

I'm curious as to how you think Trend Micro compares to Kaspersky. I've been using Kaspersky for a while now and really like it, but my license expires in a couple of months. I wouldn't be opposed to changing if Trend Micro is better.

I'd go with Kerio Personal Firewall for a free software firewall
I have mcafee, I think version 8 for AV
it expired so I can't use the automated update for dat files but I know where to go on their site to manually download them

Ashampoo has come out with a Free personal firewall, I haven't tried it but I believe it is a good company.

Kaspersky was good while I used it, I just don't think it compares to how little Trend bogs down my system.

I too have had very good luck with this one. Im not sure how true this is but I also feel that it uses fewer system resources than others that I have used as well.
