ipod lovers: when is the 6th gen ipod coming out?

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on a 60GB 5th gen ipod, however whenever I do this sort of thing, the company will release a better version. Is there anything in the rumor mill about a better version coming out soon? If so, when?

Thks

Any ideas on what we can expect from it?

I'm thinking:

> Screen: widescreen / better resolution / brighter
> Battery: longer life
> ???

I thought I read that a product announcement of some sort is scheduled for Sept 12th, although I can't lay my hands on the page where I saw it at the moment. Not known if this is an iPod upgrade, but the current hot rumor is full-length movie downloads added to the iTunes Music (Media?) Store.

There's an "Apple Event" scheduled for September 12, which is also the start of the Paris Expo. It's likely this event will introduce the new video iPod in conjunction with the iTunes Movie store istead of doing it at the Expo, as Apple and the French don't see eye to eye regarding DRM.

Would be coold if they had full length movies. The new Ipod would need to have a hell of a battery life though. Also would need a huge harddrive. That would be an expensive peice of ipod. I love my Nano.

I just got an iPod on the 22nd of last month. I am considering returning because the video functions are horrible, and it destroys battery life. I basically purchased it for these capabilities. If not, it's going back.

the 5th Gen iPod was never supposed to be a dedicated video iPod...video was just an 'extra' for it. (if that makes sense)

even w/ the new 6th Gen being a more dedicated video player, the battery life probably won't be more than a few hours...*shrug*

I appear to have wasted my money. Hopefully I can return the PSP I bought with it, if not, I may have to keep it anyway.

10:28 am Engadget: Today we're introducing the biggest single enhancement: iTunes 7
You say "it looks the same," but it isn't
[the left nav is more cleanly organized without being radically different]
We've added a View switch, a 3-position switch. we've added a 2nd view called album view, so you can scroll through your music library and look at it by album. what if you ripped your CDs and don't have the covers? Today we're announcing free missing album cover art for all the music in your library if you have an itune acct. itunes will automatically download it for free
but there's something even better. that's the third view. it's called Cover Flow view. [LOOKS LIKE FLIPPLING THROUGH YOUR CD RACK]
10:28 am iLounge: TV shows are now encoded at 640x480 (h264), up from 320x240
10:27 am iLounge: iPod updater appears to be now integrated into iTunes
10:26 am iLounge: 3 different views of iTunes, list view, album view (with art and tracks), then "cover flow view" lets you rapidly find what you want by album cover

10:33 am correction: it appears as though the nano's packaging is 52% smaller, not the nano itself.

Oh well ... I was ready to buy one ASAP if it were 52% smaller. I may still buy one, but I guess I'll take a look first.
