Probably stupid browser question

This is something that has bugged me for a long time... some webpages "take control" of your browser, mostly webmail sites, it seems to me. If you minimize or go to another tab, once the page finishes loading it pops you back to their site.

Is there a way to turn this off? An option to force the browser to ignore stuff like this coming from a webpage? I use Opera primarily, but this happens in Firefox and IE as well.

It's Gmail and my school's email. I can log into Gmail's HTML version without JavaScript, but not the second.

So basically it's JavaScript's fault? Is that something inherent in the code or does this annoying "functionality" have to be programmed in?
