Clearing computer to sell?

I recently sold a laptop. I was wondering how do I go abouts erasing the things I need to? What should I erase and how? Thanks.

At the very least you should reformat the hard drive and then wipe the free space, but even then someone who is determined might be able to find data.

Yes. There are some programs that will clear out only the erased file areas.

Do you have the restore disc or Windows installation disc that came with the laptop?

For most possible progressive wiping process, use Acronis DriveCleanser, it's extremely good.
Manually, you format the partition in question in three different file systems and try to fill it with data. this way it would never be retrieved.

Ahhh. Well, it gets complicated then. There are programs which "digitally shred" the data when put into the recycle bin. You might look for something like that. And I can't think of a name of an app at the moment.

if you are really paranoid run killdisk with 3 passes doing a complete erase, or if the free version won't do it run 3 separate full formats since doing it only once will enable someone to recover the data if they really knew what they were doing

DBAN (and IIRC killdisk) will completely WIPE your disk including your OS. there are some free options for wiping files, free space, trash, temp files, swap space, etc... eraser (linked in my previous post) will do this as will some others. a google search for "file wipe" or "secure delete" will point you in the right direction.

or you can use DBAN (or killdisk), wipe your hard drive, and let the person buying it put whatever OS they want on it.

Well, as I said before use Acronis Drive Cleanser, it will just wipe up the free space. Or you can get Acronis Privacy Expert suite, it's awesome with many optins. Privacy Expert Suite readme

Who did you sell the laptop to? Did you promise an OS? Do you know them/can you ask them questions or is it an Ebay thing? You might want to check and see what they are going to do w/ it. If they are going to put *nix or their own version of Windows on it you can use killdisk w/o any problems.
