External Hard Drive Question

Good evening everyone -

I have a quick question about my new external HD from newegg - how do I password protect the external HD so that when it's hooked up to someone else's computer, they are prompted to enter a password that only I know. I'm assuming there must be some kind of program/software out there for this - would I install the program/software on the external HD?

If it matters at all, it's a Western Digital My Book Premium 500GB 3.5" External Hard Drive.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I would recommend TrueCrypt:

Absolutely make sure you'll never forget your password!

TrueCrypt seems a bit advanced for me - I'm just looking for a simple password-protection program - I'm not concerned about plausible deniability or anything like that - the external HD will be at home - I'm just curous if there's anything simple out there. Thanks!

I think with TrueCrypt you'd have to install the software on your friend's computer to be able to you access your files.

I think http://www.steganos.com/?product=sss2006&language=en might work for you. You can store the key to access your drive on a cell phone, iPod, or USB key.
