NSA getting telephone records on US citizens, personal data stolen on an ever-increasing basis and now MS calling home....when will the madness end and people say enough is enough.

Sadly nobody cares anymore and will do nothing about it.

Pretty much. I stopped thinking the Gov/Companies weren't watching my online use,my credit card purchases, and hearing my calls a long time ago. Pretty soon we'll be like England with cameras on almost every corner watching us with face recognition software....

I'm sure it's easy to get pissed since it's Microsoft and many hate them "just because". But trust me, they're not the only ones. Remember a few years back it revealed the certain cars had some gadget that sent info back to the car maker? It's becoming a common place practice more and more these days.

What was that thing the mac os did? Something like give a friendly warning if it was a pirated copy?

I'm sure various companies do this stuff all the time. The problem is that the only way to stop it is if you completely disable net access to that program with a software firewall which is sometimes inconvenient. And even if you do allow some but restricted access, you still have no idea what the program is checking online. It might just be software updates or more than that.

I think the bottom line really is that people shouldn't be using pirated software and that they should disable a lot of the "features". For example, wmp may want to look up some info on your mp3 file but they might be analyzing it for marketing purposes.
