Can somebody recommend a good (and inexpensive) portable hard drive??

I'd like to buy one of those portable hard drives so that I can backup all the documents on my home computer and keep the portable drive in my briefcase to transport the files between home and office.

I've seen 40GB ones around $125, but that's a tad expensive and I'm not sure which brands are reliable.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

[cartman] Come on guys, this is seriously weak.[/cartman]

Nobody has any recommendations for me.

I've tried searching, and found TONS of posts recommending hard drives, but none of them dealt with the portable hard drives.

Can anybody help me out?

I would recommend that you buy a internal harddisk and an external enclosure case, then make a portable external by youself.

I should have made myself clearer. Obviously any external hard drive is "portable." However, I'm looking for one of those smaller, hand held drives like the Western Digital Passport:

I'm just asking for recommendations as to brand, best place to buy, etc.

Thanks in advance.

If you want a 40GB, I would go with this - $70 shipped

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148089

and then this enclosure to put it in $19 shipped

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145124

for $89 you have a 40gb drive with good performance and good warranty on the drive. It really requires very little skill to put the two together, if you can work a screw driver, you can do it.

I like my hard drives to have at least a 3 year. It's a trade off - 20gb of space for 4 years of warranty.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll go with one of the Seagate options ... most likely the 40GB with the 5 year warranty and just put it in the enclosure myself.

Twikoff - I realize that all external hard drives are "portable," but I'm looking for one I can carry in my briefcase with me on a daily basis. I don't really want a hard drive that takes up 25% of the space in my briefcase.
