Question about converting VHS to DVD

Okay, so I just got myself a DVD burner and I want to transfer some home movies on VHS onto a DVD. I already placed the VHS movies on my computer and made them into AVI files. However, the picture quality decreased. When they are on my computer things look pixelated, especially when people move. When I shrink Media Player the quality gets better. I transfered some to DVD but the pixelized quality still remained.

I use Nero Burning Rom to do them so I can create menus and such.

Is there a way to get rid of this and make the quality better?

It may have something to do with the resolution.

Why bother? Just wait until your home movies are on HD-DVD or BRD.

Agreed. They need to be in MPEG-2 for DVD.

I have a question that might be a little bit related. I have some DVDs with MPEG audio (I think that is the audio type, or at least something close to that) that won't play on either of my three regular DVD players. Well, the video will play just fine but there will be no audio. Anyway, if I put the DVD into my portable DVD player, though, it works just fine. Is there any way to convert the audio to AC3? Or is there a DVD player that would be recommended that could play all audio types?
