Sound card crackle: what could the problem be?

I installed a new SB Audigy card a couple of weeks ago, and since then I will get occasional static during playback of songs. There's no pattern to when it occurs, and it goes away by itself.

Is this indicative of a bad card? I know it's not the speakers, because I upgraded my speakers since installing the new sound card and it happened on my old set as well as the new.

Could be bad drivers (I've had that happen and had to try out several versions until I found a good one), could be bad card or PCI bus problems. Maybe move it to a new slot and see what happens.
