Videos won't play when opened through IE, they work fine in FireFox. Why?

My wife likes to use Internet Explorer, and whenever she tries to open an .avi, she's getting an error that WMP cannot play the file (I have the divx codec installed, and it works just fine when opened directly from FireFox). Also, if I save the file to disk and open it, it works fine as well.

If I try to open a .wmv from IE, I get a different error saying that the source filter could not be loaded. Again, it works fine when opened from FireFox, or downloaded and opened from Windows Explorer.

Does anyone know what could cause this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mine does that because I don't allow ActiveX to run in IE.

I just re-formatted yesterday, so all the IE settings were on the defaults. I went in and changed all the ActiveX options to Enable just to test, and it still gives the same errors, so I set things back to the defaults.

I would reinstall WMP just to make certain all the file associations and plugin settings are set to use WMP.

However, since you said you just reformatted that may not be the case. Have you installed all the updates from WindowsUpdate?

Yeah, I went ahead and uninstalled WMP10 and Divx and reinstalled them just to make sure, as well as getting all the updates off Windows Update (even if they didn't seem to be necessary), and still have the same problem.

This didn't happen prior to the format, so I don't know what the deal with this is, but it's got me kind of perplexed.
