What kind of sound card should I get?

Following T-ball's "What kind of video card should I get?" thread, I think I'm in the market for a new sound card.

I've had Soundblasters since the beginning of time. I've heard that Soundblaster is generally overpriced so if there are better, cheaper options, that would be great. I'd like the card to do well with music, video and games. I'd also like it to be as inexpensive as possible, of course, so "best bang for your buck" type suggestions are welcome. Oh, and I only have PCI slots available, no PCI 2.

So what can you good folks recommend?

What's your budget?

You can pick up an SB Audigy PCI card for $29, which is inexpensive and it seems like a decent "cheap" card.

I'm an old Soundblaster faithful from way back, btw...

For gaming, Sound Blaster Audigy line or the new X-Fi are really your only bets, as no other cards support the latest EAX sound enhancements that the latest games use. The X-Fi is on the steeper side, although the reviews seem to say they're well worth it.

I'm hoping to keep it under $100 unless there's something that really rocks and is worth a steeper price.

I'll check out some X-Fi reviews and see what it has to offer.

Thanks for the responses so far.

The lowest end X-Fi, the XtremeMusic, is 79.99 after rebates this week at CompUSA. Retail is 129. You can get an Audigy 2 ZS online in the 60 range which is pretty solid as well.

If gaming isn't your thing, many people like M-Audio's sound cards.
