Adding RAM?

Okay, I know they say RAM is the cheapest, best upgrade you can do to your machine. I'm interested. For some reason when I bought my machine [a Dell 4700], I only got 512 MB. I have 4 slots, with 2, 256 MBmodules in two of them.
Going through the Dell Upgrade wizard, they offered me four options, 2 different 512 MB and 2 different 1 GB modules. Each one says "units required: 2."
Here are the two I was looking at.
DELL - 512 MB Module for a Dell Dimension 4700 Series System
512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 / 533 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered
Dell Part #: A0375067, Manufacturer Part #: MT16HTF6464AY53EB2
Usually Ships: Within 24 Hours Units Req.: 2
DELL - 1 GB Module for a Dell Dimension 4700 Series System
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 / 533 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered
Dell Part #: A0375074, Manufacturer Part #: MT16HTF12864AY53EA1 Units Req.: 2*

The 512 MBs are 89$ each, and the 1 GB are 110 each. I'm guessing that since I am looking at the OEM site, the pricing is quite high.

* Is RAM, RAM? that is, could I look for a cheaper site that has "512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 / 533 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered" and be fine?

* Why do I need 2? What if I just got one module?

thanks for your help. I debating upgrading to 1 GB or more when I bought the thing, instead of just 512, but for some reason I decided not to. I'm definitely seeing slowdown on some games and apps [okay, games].

In this context, yes--RAM is RAM. Meaning, you can buy RAM module(s) elsewhere with the same specs, it doesn't have to be from Dell. You can discriminate b/n brands, for a more reputable brand for example, or lower latency in the specs. Like you said, you can choose any "512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 / 533 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered."

You don't "need" 2. You need 2 if you want your computer to make use of "dual channel mode." See this link for some info:

Personally, I'd make use of it and purchase 2 of the same 512M or 1G RAM module. You can find cheaper than Dell on websites like Newegg, etc. For example, much cheaper and quality Mushkin brand:
